Damhuis Restaurant

Indulge in a unique dining experience at Damhuis Restaurant, nestled within the walls of one of the oldest structures in the Western Cape, a South African National Monument. Steeped in history and offering breathtaking views of the iconic Table Mountain and Robben Island, Damhuis provides a charming setting to savor seafood and traditional South African cuisine. Rain or shine, this restaurant stands as the ideal venue for a family-friendly meal, making it a must-visit destination while exploring the enchanting locales of Melkbosstrand and the West Coast of South Africa.

The inception of Damhuis traces back to 1785 when Christiaan Brand constructed the building using unconventional materials such as cow manure, sand, hay, and whale bones. Originally serving as a ‘visschuur’ or fish barn, the facility was utilized for cleaning, salting, and drying fish by Brand and his family, who were the pioneering residents of De Melkbosch (Melkbosstrand). Adjacent to the fish barn was a boathouse, housing fishing boats and nets. Evolving over the years, the structure transitioned from a fish store to a private residence, witnessing the transformations brought about by urban development.

The name ‘Damhuis’ originated from the dam located in front of the building, a result of a natural spring that still provides crystal-clear water today. Although the current Beach Road covers the dam, the natural water spring continues to thrive on the property. Despite the changes, Damhuis has preserved its historical significance, representing a journey through time that spans over 200 years.

Officially opening its doors in 2009, Damhuis Restaurant comprises interconnected sections, including the Fishermen’s Tent, die Voorhuijs, and die Stampkroeg, spanning over 1000 square meters. Devoted to creating an unforgettable dining experience, Damhuis has earned the distinction of a “culinary hotspot” in Melkbosstrand. Recognized as a National Monument, Damhuis stands proudly, blending rich history and heritage with the serene coastal beauty of Melkbosstrand. Each visit to Damhuis is a delightful encounter with the past, celebrating the legacy of Christiaan Brand and his family.
